Eye Somehow Didn't See This Coming
First subway ride in ages. Got an eye exam and new glasses and stopped by work. Have never seen the newsroom completely empty!
That's the late/great David Rakoff's "Uncollected" book at my optometrist's office!
But then ...
My elderly mom (the inimitable Molly) and stepdad in Arizona have been cautious yet both tested positive Tuesday. (I only found out today — my mother didn’t want to worry me.) I am worried sick -- she was right! -- but symptoms have been fairly mild thus far (aches, exhaustion but no fever or difficulty breathing). Be safe, everyone. ❤️☘️🙏

Many Americans losing their insurance now have never used the marketplace or Medicaid -- and may need advertising to tell them more about the opportunity
This is 100% true, but what I don't get is why leaders of the GOP remain loyal. Yes, Trump has a unique ability to increase turnout. But as we have learned, it's not enough voters to win elections -- in fact, for every person he excites he is turning off one or two more. Why would a party remain loyal to a man who has cost it the House, Senate and the presidency?
Andrea Halland-Arms Awarded ACES Bill Walsh Scholarship for 2021
Congrats to University of Montana student Andrea Halland-Arms on winning the 2021 Bill Walsh Scholarship. She is the online and print supervising editor of the Montana Kaiminis, which has been the university's student-run newspaper since 1898. In addition, she is a social media intern for Waldorf Publishing.
My late brother Bill’s love of language lives on through outstanding young editors like her. Although the pandemic makes holding an in-person ACES conference impossible this year, our excitement for our winner is as strong as ever. xo

Andrea Halland-Arms, a University of Montana student with a double major in journalism and English literature, is the fourth annual winner of the $3,500 Bill Walsh Scholarship, named for the late author of three books and editor of news at The Washington Post.
After winning the Walsh Scholarship, which goes to a student who aspires to a career of editing news, Halland-Arms said: “Ever since middle school, I have wanted to be an editor, specifically a book editor, at first. When I got to college, I decided to study journalism because I read that many people in the publishing field have degrees in journalism. I fell in love with the program and editing journalistic writing … and I hope to continue work as a copy editor after I graduate.
Finalists for the 2021 scholarship had to write a solution for a newsroom deadline dilemma, correct a news lead, write short summaries for a variety of news reports, take a timed editing test and write briefly regarding the worst thing a news copy editor can do.
The worst, Halland-Arms wrote, is to “allow a factual inaccuracy or a misspelled name to be published.” Doing so would “demonstrate that the copy editor does not have a passion for delivering accurate news to their community.”
Support for the Walsh Scholarship comes from donations from the Walsh family, members of ACES: The Society for Editing, and other contributors. The scholarship competition is administered by the ACES Education Fund, of which Bill Walsh was a board member.

Farewell to the legendary Cloris Leachman, who dazzled us in a variety of roles over the course of eight decades. (How much do I love this women? I canceled a date with a bodybuilder to catch a one-off screening of "The Last Picture Show" at the New Beverly Cinema in my 20s, and today I own bootleg DVDs of the sitcom "Phyllis"!) Here’s hoping there’s a big reunion between Mrs. Lindstrom, Rhoda and Mary tonight at 119 N. Weatherly Ave. in the sky. 💔
