Remains of the Day (06/19)

Juan Buis: A look back at some of the best Roland Garros posters from over the years. (I took this photo of the 1987 one when I first visited Paris as a 19-year-old with really bad hair!)

Happy Juneteenth!

A friend/old colleague shared this on celebrating Juneteenth when you aren't black, which I thought was worth a tumble:

Dr. Karida Brown, a sociology professor at Emory University, said there’s no reason to feel awkward about wanting to recognize Juneteenth just because you have no personal ties or you’re not black. In fact, embrace it.

“If you want to bring some authenticity to your recognition of Juneteenth, educate yourself … That goes longer than a celebration,” says Dr. David Anderson, a black pastor and CEO of Gracism Global.

Tennis Tuesday

For some reason a handful of photos didn't make it into yesterday's tennis roundup -- which is probably not the worst thing considering I need to be a better editor sometimes. (Some of these boys are just too hot not to post!) But I couldn't let the return of former Wimbledon and U.S. Open doubles champ Horia Tecau go without notice. Here he is in his native Romania participating in an exhibition featuring local hero Simona Halep, Steffi Graf, Andre Agassi, Andrei Pavel and Justin Gimelstob. More of the 6-4 specimen plus a few lost treasures BELOW.

Queerty Honors Paula Pell and Charles Busch at Pride 50 Gala

Kicked off NYC Pride the old-fashioned way last night -- in person. Damian, our friend Greg and I had a nice time at Queerty’s Pride 50 party at the Edison Ballroom, where famed "SNL" writer Paula Pell and drag legend Charles Busch were given top honors among the 50 movers and shakers of 2024. Pride has taken on a more significant meaning in these hateful times, so it was nice to share an upbeat moment with likeminded peers. In solidarity. xo

Happy Daddy’s Day

This unsigned post appeared on Facebook last week, proving it's never too late to love your dad:
“For Father’s Day this year I recreated my favorite picture of my dad. It’s him after he graduated high school in 1980 and me after graduating today.”

Cheers to all the halfway decent dads* of the world -- or any who look like this!

On a personal note: Want to wish my mom and stepdad a very happy 51st(!) anniversary! 🥂

And happy Father’s Day to my stepdad, Gary, who was brave enough to take on three snot-nosed boys who were deeply damaged by having -- and also losing -- a beloved alcoholic father. It couldn’t have been easy, but I am grateful that you’re in our lives. You are loved.

And also a big hug to Damian and his four sisters, who are marking their first Father's Day since their dad died last month. I’m thankful I got to know the man who helped produce such a remarkable son. xo

*Remember: Even the best dad in the world is a mediocre mom.
