They use to say this of radio, but that's still around... almost as strong as it's ever been. I don't think printed media will go the way of the dinosaurs.
Back in the 80's, I worked for the Oakland Tribune. My leaving the industry was more a victim of circumstance. Back then Robert Maynard was the owner, but I had heard through the grape-vine that he was selling the paper to the then West County News Group (Contra Costa County, CA). While my job was somewhat unique, and after having saved the Tribune from being embezzled by an employee for the tune of 100k, I also heard that only 20% of the staff (mostly reporters and press crew) would be taken on by the WCNG, so I jumped ship before the axe dropped.
Biggest (!) change I've seen with newspapers, similar to radio, they've shrunk. Physically, most newspapers are literally 20-25% smaller (dimensions) then they use to be. That, and most sections of the local rags have fewer pages, except Sports.
