If the criticism is lip-synching, guilty as charged; the show was all tracked, including Cee-Lo and the choir. However, that happens with shows of that size—Fergie is more of a singer than Madonna and sounded atrocious. They can't hear themselves and the sound logistics are hugely challenging. The best singers in the world have lip-synched, including Michael Jackson's famous Motown 25 performance and Whitney Houston's national anthem. Yes, I wanted live vocals, too. But the piece you linked to harps far more on Madonna being too old and being a has-been. A has-been is not still knocking down hits and causing such a stir with viewers. You like plenty of old-timers; that shouldn't be the bone of contention. But it is frustrating with you bc you haven't seen Madonna's concerts in ages and won't believe that she actually does sing live or sing very audibly over tracking throughout her gigs. She sounds good, she sounds bad, she sounds in-between, but she does sing.
@Matt: The point of the post was that I thought Mark Allen's tweet was HILARIOUS! Obviously the lip-syching *is* the criticism. (I didn't think there was any room for ambiguity in what I wrote, but I guess I was wrong.) Only read the beginning of the linked story. That's what the headline and lede were about -- hence my inclusion -- not really interested in what else the writer has to say. As you even mention, though, I'm a sucker for an "oldie," so I find it hard to believe you thought for a second the age aspect was what I was highlighting, so I'm not sure why you honed in on that.
Anyway. What's the disclaimer they use on some sites? The inclusion of links from this site does not imply endorsement -- or in this case, FULL endorsement!
As for seeing Madonna live now. I'm not sure why it would be "frustrating" to you personally(!) -- I have HBO, I'm fully aware of her "singing" -- but my arena concert days are over. (I think I went to one for free a few years ago and it was awful being miles away from the stage.) Luckily, most of the artists I like are more in Joe's Pub country, where a guitar and vocal cords are about all they need to pull it off. :-)
if she needs to lipsync why doesn't she use a high-quality "live" version instead of the record version? it would be so much less distracting. it seems like she had to do that on "like a virgin" to fit in with the other singers but didn't bother on the other songs?
The post was funny, no need to go all Elton John. I loved the entrance more than anything. I can hear the voice in her head now, "Enter in an egg, please, bitch I'll show you how to make an entrance." Of course she didn't want her entrance to be "reductive" compared to a Gaga entrance.
