Winning Look: Not all his Jets teammates may approve, but I'm all about rookie QB Mark Sanchez's new beard. (And he hasn't lost a game since growing it.) (NYT)
Just Beat It: And speaking of boys 'n' beards, here's a look at James Franco as poet Allen Ginsberg in the new film "Howl." (Towleroad)
The Daily Dilemma: Is it time for a government bailout for the journalism industry? (Ryan Deal)
Just Ask Larry Kramer: Gay men and lesbians are a politically unpopular and relatively powerless force in the United States, even though the public tends to think otherwise, a political scientist testified Wednesday during a historic trial on the constitutionality of California's same-sex marriage ban. (AP)
Call of the Wild: Jill Sobule needs bear footage for a new music video she is making with Margaret Cho. When last in SF Jill wrote a song about how, were she a man, she would want to be a bear. Tuesday, Jan. 26 at 2 p.m. at Femina Potens Art Gallery, 2199 Market St. @ Sanchez (formerly Image Leather) (Bears of SF)
Blond Editing: Sure sounds like USA Today's Life section could use a hand on the copy desk. I don't know anything about Britney Spears, but they got the date of Madonna's debut album wrong by THREE years; EVERYONE had already called Debbie Harry the "Marilyn Monroe" of punk a few years before; and does Madonna even really do "Into the Groove" or "Like a Virgin" in concert anymore, unless she's being "cheeky"? (USA Today)
You Go, Girl: Margaret Hoover, President Herbert Hoover's great-granddaughter -- and a Fox News contributor, no less -- went on the conservative news channel to make the Republican case for marriage equality. (It's really well-done.) (FoxNews)
Becks Appeal: David Beckham looking good at the Adidas Original show at Milan Fashion Week. (Mr. Paparazzi)
Obama Aid: The Department of Justice is stepping in to defend a gay high school student in Mohawk, N.Y., who was bullied for being effeminate. (WKTV)
My Own H8: While I appreciate that Meghan and Cindy McCain are doing their part to support marriage equality, wouldn't Cindy's time be better spent slipping antifreeze into her abusive husband's lime Jello? (Advocate)
Head Case: Poor Chan Gailey can't even get respect from closed captioning. (Deadspin)
It's nice that some prominent Republicans are coming out in favor of marriage equality, but sad that probably a lot of gay people will say, "See, they're the same or even BETTER than the Democrats!"...considering the vast majority of the Republican party is actively anti-gay to the point where they'd love to legislate against it, while the vast majority of the Democratic party is not anti-gay and is at worst inactive on the subject. (Which is annoying and frustrating, but still preferable.)
Madonna does still do "Into the Groove" and "Like a Virgin" at concerts; she did the former on her most recent concert and the latter on her second most recent tour. And sang them both, not lip-synched. But the rest is appalling! :0)
Re: USA Today charticle ... I'm in the same biz you are, Ken, and I cringe whenever I see something like this hit the rim because I just KNOW little, if any, of the stuff in it has been checked by the line editor.
If I didn't have to move 6 stories in the next hour, I'd be happy to do it myself. But ... < shrug >
