Forget any of the movies they've made of the story, this past summer when I read Paul Gallico's 1969 novel "The Poseidon Adventure," I imagined Christian Bale as the main character, Frank Scott.
Gene Hackman played him in the '72 flick, but Gallico originally drew him as a late 20's/early 30's Princeton hunk...who, by the end of the book, is practically buck naked!!
Now, had Wolfgang Petersen gone THAT route rather than the sorry one he took, the '06 remake might have found a wider audience.
