Weekend Tennis Roundup

Ben Shelton and Victoria Mboko won big in Canada. Full report plus all the ATP beef that's fit to post BELOW.

Here we go ...

Ben Shelton made a giant leap forward by claiming his maiden ATP Masters 1,000 title, edging Karen Khachanov in three sets 6-7 (5), 6-4, 7-6(3) to win the Canadian Open.

With the title he rises to No. 6 in the rankings, and further signals that he may well be the most likely American to win a major in the years ahead. (Sorry, Taylor and Tommy, but I just don't see it happening for either of you.)

Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko made history, bouncing back from a set down to stun four-time major champion Naomi Osaka 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 in the women's final to capture the first WTA title of her career -- in front of a home crowd in Montreal.

By defeating Osaka, Coco Gauff, Elena Rybakina and Sofia Kenin in the tournament, the 18-year-old defeated four Grand Slam champions in a single tournament. A lot has been said about Osaka's unfortunate postmatch comments. But even more disturbing is the fact that she seemed to completely give up midway through the match, for reasons that are unclear.

In doubles, Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool capped another dominant run this season by securing a dramatic victory over Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski in an all-British final in Toronto.

The second seeds demonstrated immense composure, edging Salisbury/Skupski 6-3, 6-7(5), 13-11 to win their maiden ATP Masters 1000 trophy as a team to go with their recent Wimbledon crown.

Karen had a lot of nice things to say after his near-loss, harkening back to the time he told Ben's father that his then-college son should give the pros a shot.

BY THE NUMBERS:

Jannik Sinner sure seems to have the year-end No. 1 spot in the bag. Even if Carlos is able to triumph in New York, the defending champion would need to bow out very early for it to make a difference on top. Meanwhile Sabalenka is well on her way to becoming a Slamless No. 1 if she doesn't clean up her game and take home the trophy. As much as I hate this, Gauff and Swiatek have been so erratic I'd almost have to be OK with it as no one else would deserve it either, assuming neither of them picks up a second major in Flushing Meadows.
