Ruud and Sabalenka won big in Madrid. Full report plus all the ATP beef that's fit to post BELOW.
Casper Ruud became the first Norwegian to win a Masters 1000 title, beating Jack Draper 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 in the Madrid Open final on Sunday. Ruud rallied from 5-3 down in the first set and sealed the victory after capitalizing on his lone break at 2-2 in the third. I was OK with either of them winning but ultimately decided Ruud needed it more, so was happy with the outcome.
The 26-year-old, who was once ranked No. 2 before recently falling out of the Top 10, rises to No. 7 on the computer today.
In the men's doubles final, Horacio Zeballos and Marcel Granollers defeated Marcelo Arévalo and Mate Pavić, 6–4, 6–4
The Argentinian Zeballos just turned 40, so three cheers for the senior!
On the women's side, Aryna Sabalenka defeated Coco Gauff to win her third career Madrid Open title with a 6-3, 7-6(3) victory over No. 4 seed American.
Gauff's 6-1, 6-1 dismissal of Iga Swiatek in the semis, however, is what I will remember most. Will the former No. 1, who hasn't won a title since Roland Garros, ever regain her form? Was there more to her doping than we know about? We shall see.

Naomi Osaka played a clay-court Challenger event last week and won. She still hasn't captured a tour-level tournament in over four years -- when she took home her second Aussie Open in 2021, of all things -- but maybe this will give her confidence going into the French
Jack Draper may have lost in the Madrid final. But barring injury, his future looks as solid as he does.
And he sure looks like he could fit a lot in his mouth

Although he beat Andrea Pellgrino in the final, 6-4, 6-4, the Italian had a hell of a week, advancing from qualifying and then defeating Felix Auger Aliassime and Nicolas Jarry en route to the title match

In Austria, Cristian Garin made a resounding comeback. The 28-year-old Chilean won the Challenger event there by defeating compatriot Tomas Barrios Vera in the final, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4
The 2:31 victory marked Garin's first title since March 2021, when he captured the ATP level Chile Open
