Weekend Tennis Roundup

Sinner and Sabalenka win the final major of the year. Full report plus all the ATP beef that's fit to post BELOW.

Jannik Sinner took out Taylor Fritz (6-3, 6-4, 7-5) to capture his first U.S. Open and second major title. Although it was fairly routine, the American department-store heir made the third set interesting before succumbing to the dominant Italian.

Similarly Aryna Sabalenka defeated Jessica Pegula (7-5, 7-5) to win her first U.S. Open and third major title. The Belarusian seemed to be in total control before the American heiress got each set back on serve -- only to be broken again. But all credit to Jess for keeping it close against a powerful player whose mind is now nearly commensurate with her strokes.

Aussies Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson defeated the German team of Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz 6-4, 7-6 (4) for their first major trophy together.

Lyudmyla Kichenok was supposed to get married last week to Jelena Ostapenko's coach. A run to the U.S. Open women's doubles championship forced a change of plans. Kichenok and Ostapenko ended up winning the title Friday for their first major as a team, beating Kristina Mladenovic and Zhang Shuai 6-4, 6-3.

And Italians Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori capped a dream run to the mixed doubles title Thursday, where the third seeds overcame home hopes Taylor Townsend and Donald Young 7-6(0), 7-5 in the championship match.

Numbers game:

How Carlos Alcaraz can be the reigning French and Wimbledon champion but be behind Alexander Zverev is one of those computer-ranking moments that give me huge pause. (Do we need to make majors worth 2,500?)

Although Iga is solidly ahead in points, Aryna definitely feels like the No. 1 player right now.
