While I was getting hitched, Sebastian Baez won in Winston-Salem and Sara Sorribes Tormo won in Cleveland. Full report plus all the ATP beef that's fit to post -- including some not particularly safe for work(!) -- BELOW.
Sixth seed Sebastian Baez produced a squeaky clean performance Saturday to win the Winston-Salem Open and extend his winning streak to 10 matches after also claiming the ATP 250 event in Kitzbühel three weeks ago. The Argentine needed just one hour, 34 minutes to defeat fifth seed Jiri Lehecka 6-4, 6-3 and capture his first tour-level title on hard courts and third trophy of the season. Unlike many winners of the tournaments the week before a major, Baez continued his success in the first round of the U.S. Open, knocking out Borna Coric in the first set. Vamos!
Lucky loser Sara Sorribes Tormo of Spain battled to her second career WTA singles title on Saturday, fighting back on numerous occasions to clinch a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory over No.4 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova in the Tennis in the Land final. The Spaniard also continued her success into this week's U.S. Open, upsetting Anhelina Kalinina in the opening round. Sorribes Tormo is the sixth lucky loser to win a singles title in WTA history. Strikingly, three of those six occasions have come this summer alone -- Maria Timofeeva (at Budapest) and Nao Hibino (at Prague) have also won titles as lucky losers within the last two months.
A U.S. summer of success continued for Nathaniel Lammons and Jackson Withrow on Saturday at the Winston-Salem Open. The American duo downed second seeds Lloyd Glasspool and Neal Skupski 6-3, 6-4 in the final at the hard-court ATP 250 for their third tour-level title as a team, all of which have come in the past six weeks on American soil.
Safe to say this was one of the best-looking finals in the history of doubles!
