Song of the Day: 'Pretty Baby' by Blondie

I'm barely a few chapters into Debbie Harry's memoir and I've already learned that her pediatrician told her mom when Debbie was a FEW MONTHS OLD that she'd "better watch out for this one" because she has "bedroom eyes," and that a man in a parked car called her over to show her his penis when she was about 8, walking with a 4-year-old neighbor. It's horrifying and heartbreaking -- if #MeToo has taught me nothing else, it's that there isn't a woman alive who hasn't been sexually violated in some way or another -- but equally distressing is that I honestly believe it's why so many women of a certain age are able to ignore known bad behavior of men in power. When I brought up "Access Hollywood" in 2016, my Debbie Harry-age mother said, "As long as I've been alive, that's just how men are ..." What I wish she'd done is denounce it to send a message to her grandchildren -- a boy and a girl -- that this is inexcusable, but alas that was not in the cards. Will some of these women voters behave differently this time? Like a battered woman, I fear not.
