Music Box: 'After Your Party' by Tanya Donelly

My friend Matt's singularly heartbreaking post about the first time you learn about rejection nearly crushed me this morning, much in the same way this Tanya Donelly b-side does every time I hear it. Now can someone explain to me why this gifted singer/songwriter -- of Throwing Muses, Breeders and Belly fame -- is supporting herself as a postpartum doula while [insert artist's name here] is still making a living as a recording artist?

A superlative question all the more pertinent after the abomination that was on MTV last night! Tanya is one of my favorites and always will be! Matt's post was very poignant.

Hooray for the Tanya Donelly love! Funny for you to bring her up, because I hadn't thought of her in a while, until I read this strange interview with Kristin Hersh over at the Guardian earlier this week. (She's got a new book out.) You inspired me to pull out an old This Mortal Coil album, "Blood," where Tanya and Kim Deal do a lovely duet. This song is awesome--thanks for posting it.

Belly got me through High School and Tanya got me through College. I saw she just announced a date or two within the last week or so. There's a great interview with her (and Kristin, Siobhan, Courtney, the Lush girls and a few others) in the book Women Sex and Rock and Roll. Good stuff if you can track it down. And her b-sides were always just as good or better than the album tracks!
