My first thought when I saw that Madonna's plans for a girls school in Malawai had fallen apart was, not like Oprah, no good deed goes unpunished.
Then this graf jumped out at me:
She and her aides offered no explanation of why, given her high interest in the project, she had not noticed the problems as they began unfolding.
And then I thought, well, maybe it's because she was too busy working on her profit-generating chain of fitness centers around the world. (You really can only do so much.) I'll retract this mean-spirited comment if and when those, too, fall apart as a result of gross financial mismanagement. (When is she going to stop hanging out with those "Yiddish Scientologists," anyway? Even I thought she was smarter than that.)

This Used to Be Where They Planned to Build a Playground

She had good intentions and has still brought good attention to Malawi's plight. My impression is the single school for girls is dunzo but investing in a series of schools is on the table; a HuffPo writer who had been vehemently against the prior plan praised this new one, though we'll have to see what comes to pass. $3.8 million is a lot to blow, but not in the grand (Madonna) scheme of things, and I'm sure lots of that cash came from a % of sales as opposed to straight donations.
