My uncle Joe's obituary from The Pottsville Republican & Herald:
Joseph M. Walsh, born in Pottsville, July 27, 1925, died Friday in a fire in Silver Spring, Md.
Joe was the son of the late Michael J. "Mickey" Walsh, a past sports editor for the former Pottsville Republican and a reporter for the former Pottsville Journal.
Joe graduated first in his class at Pottsville Catholic High School. He served in the Army Air Corps in occupied Italy as a belly gunner on a B-24, where he flew combat missions over Europe. Joe was also a member of the Army Air Corps boxing team.
Joe was the first in his family to attend college. He was on the varsity boxing team at the Catholic University of America. After graduating from Catholic U, he attended and graduated from Georgetown University Law School. Joe was a member of the bars of Pennsylvania, District of Columbia and Maryland. He retired from the Department of Labor, where he worked as a government trial lawyer.
Joe was a lifelong devout Catholic who was active as a CYO coach and as an official of basketball, softball and baseball for St. Mary's parish in Rockville, Md. He also taught CCD later in life at St. Aloysius Parish, Littlestown.
He married the former Clara Shaw of Northeast, D.C., in 1951. He was the last surviving child of a family of 10 siblings. He is survived by his wife, Clara; four sons and a daughter, Joseph M. Walsh Jr., Richard F. Walsh, William R. Walsh, Nanette M. Walsh and Timothy R. Walsh; 8 grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
