In a battle of the beef, Peru’s Ignacio Buse capped his rapid rise by beating Arthur Fery to become the youngest champion in Winston-Salem history -- and climb to a career-high No. 30.

Diane Parry wasn’t even planning on playing the Abierto GNP Seguros, but her last-minute trip to Monterrey paid off spectacularly as the 23-year-old Frenchwoman upset Elise Mertens 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 to capture her first WTA title.
Mary Carillo brought down the house at the International Tennis Hall of Fame with her brand of wit, while fellow inductee Roger Federer struggled -- and mostly failed -- to hold back tears during an emotional tribute to the people who shaped his extraordinary career. Say what you will about people's right to privacy and journalists not wanting to "be the story," but I found it deeply depressing that Mary never thanked a single person in her "box" by name -- while Roger thanked everyone and their brother -- which I believe was calculated as to not have to exclude whom I am guessing is her partner. Mary was born in 1957 -- exactly 10 years before me. But her self-loathing dates back way farther. I remember her showing up at a GLAAD Awards ceremony at the Marriott Marquis hotel years ago and sort of "soft" coming out. But I recently tried to look up what year that was and there's absolutely no record of it -- her being a lesbian wouldn't exactly have been breaking news, but still -- almost making me doubt myself that it ever happened.
