Here's one from the late Captain Beefheart, one of the most romantic songs I've ever heard -- this line: "My heart won't beat until I wrap my arms around you / My arms are just two things in the way until I can wrap them around you," gets me every time -- from his 1972 LP, "Clear Spot."The Tubes covered it nicely in 1977, but it was Everything But the Girl's take -- changing the tempo and phrasing ever so slightly -- as a b-side on their "I Didn't Know I Was Looking for Love" single in 1996, that is my favorite version yet. (Perhaps it was destiny: The single jacket was the marquee of the Royal Oak Music Theater in Michigan, the city where I was born.)
