Mensik and Sabalenka won big in Miami. Full report plus all the ATP beef that's fit to post BELOW
Czech cutie Jakub Mensík denied boyhood idol Novak Djokovic of his 100th career title, stunning the 24-time Grand Slam champion 7-6(4), 7-6(4) in Sunday’s Miami Open final. The 19-year-old, ranked No. 54 in the world, hammered down 14 aces in an impressively confident display of power and guile in what was by far the biggest moment of his young career. (He jumps 30 spots in the ATP rankings today, up to No. 24.)
Mensik said after the match: “I was watching him growing up. Because of him, basically I started to play tennis. So, it just feels incredible that I had the opportunity for a second time to play against him. And to beat him in this tournament in the finals, it was just a dream to win an ATP tournament, and even better that it’s a 1000. Yeah, playing against Novak in the finals makes it more special.”
Adding: “One hour before my first match here I was holding the paper to pull out from the tournament.. My knee was hurting a lot. I was lucky that the referee was having lunch. Because of him I step on the court, and because of him I'm standing here."
“This is Jakub’s moment,” Djokovic said. “The moment of his team, the moment of his family. Congratulations, unbelievable tournament. The first of many. It hurts me to admit it, but you were better. In the clutch moments, you delivered the goods. Unbelievable serving and just a phenomenal effort mentally as well to be able to stay tough in the difficult moments. For a young player like yourself, this is a great feature and something that I’m sure you will use many, many times in the years to follow.”
Only this weekend did I learn that the GOAT had taken an interest in Mensik after seeing him lose a heartbreaking Aussie Open juniors final, inviting him to Belgrade and Montenegro to train.
Aryna Sabalenka claimed her second title of the year by beating Jessica Pegula 7-5 6-2 in the Miami Open women's final. Although I'm not unhappy that the Belarusian lost in Melbourne and Indian Wells, it's nice to see the best player back on top.

Marcelo Arévalo and Mate Pavić defeated Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool in the men's doubles final, 7–6, 6–3.
Although the pretty Brits came up short, has anyone else noticed that Glasspool is double the size he used to be?
