Titles for Ruud and Keys as well as first-timers Mpetshi Perricard and Stearns in the run-up to Roland Garros. Full report plus all the ATP beef that's fit to post BELOW.
Casper Ruud scored a hat-trick Saturday at the Geneva Open, where he captured his third title at the clay ATP 250. The Norwegian, who won Geneva in 2021 and 2022, pulled double duty to triumph in Switzerland after Friday rain postponed his semifinal match to Saturday.
Ruud, seeded second, saved a match point to down Flavio Cobolli 1-6, 6-1, 7-6(4) in the last four before returning to court and ousting Tomas Machac, 7-5, 6-3 in the final.
The Swiss crowd, of course, was the real winner
When the studly Czech came out half-naked during his upset over Novak Djokovic in the semis.
Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, whom I had never even heard of in passing, won his maiden trophy by saving a match point against Tomas Martin Etcheverry in Saturday's final in Lyon, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(7). It was just the 20-year-old Frenchman's fourth tour-level event -- and the second year in a row that a young French star has triumphed in Lyon, after Arthur Fils also won his maiden ATP Tour crown there last year. Watch a cute video where he dishes on all the players HERE.
After a rock-solid start on the European clay in 2024, Marcelo Arevalo and Mate Pavic turned their consistency into a trophy Saturday at the Geneva Open, taking out Lloyd Glasspool and Jean-Julien Rojer 7-6(2), 7-5 to claim the trophy.
Harri Heliovaara and Henry Patten continued the red-hot start to their partnership by clinching their second ATP Tour title together. The Finnish-British team dug deep for a 3-6, 7-6(4), 10-8 final triumph against the Indian-French team of Yuki Bhambri and Albano Olivetti in Lyon.
Cut to me posting a half-dozen photos of the losers, because the Frenchman is 6-foot-8 and looks like this ...
Madison Keys captured her first title of the year by cruising past compatriot Danielle Collins 6-1, 6-2 at the WTA 500 in Strasbourg.
Peyton Stearns broke through Saturday in the Morocco Open in Rabat, capturing her first WTA singles title with a straight-set victory (6-2, 6-1) over Egypt's Mayar Sherif. You may recall that she's starting working with cutie Tom Hill since his breakup with Maria Sakkari.
Looks like someone got two trophies!
