Titles for Bublik, Ostapenko and Shnaider; the Davis Cup lineup is set for September; plus all the ATP beef that's fit to post BELOW.
Although he's probably in my Top 3 least favorite players, all credit to Alexander Bublik for making history on Sunday, becoming the first man to win a tournament having lost the first set in each of his matches. Bublik, the No. 2 seed, rallied yet again in beating Croatia's Borna Coric, the fourth seed, 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 in the finals of the Open Sud de France in Montpellier, France. (The second Damian saw Borna was playing Holger Rune in the semifinals, he called it a match to decide who got to lose to Bublik in the final!) Bublik won the same event in 2022 at the indoor hard-court ATP 250. He has four tour titles and rose from No. 27 to a career-high No. 23 in the ATP rankings on Monday.
Less annoying was the doubles final, where top seeds Sadio Doumbia and Fabien Reboul dug deep to defeat Albano Olivetti and Sam Weissborn 6-7(5), 6-4, 10-6 in the south of France to claim their second tour-level title as a team. Now that was a lot of man on one court!
No.1 seed Jelena Ostapenko became the first player to win two Hologic WTA Tour singles titles this year, storming past No.2 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-2, 6-3 on Sunday to capture the Upper Austria Ladies Linz championship. Imagine how many she'd have by now if all those electronic line calls weren't "going against her"?(!)
And Diana Shnaider (???) captured her first title by defeating defending champion Zhu Linz 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 in the final of the Thailand Open on Sunday. The unseeded 19-year-old Russian beat the top three seeds en route to the trophy, taking out top seed Magda Linette, No.2 seed Zhu and No.3 seed Wang Xiyu.
