Deadline: My faith in the jury system just took another hit: I'd never heard any music by Ed Sheeran before today -- YouTube Music pointed me to 'Shape of You' and, wow, is that truly awful -- but I went ahead and listened to the side-by-side audio of his "Thinking Out Loud" and Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On" to see if the former ripped off the latter, as was alleged in a copyright suit. The jury ruled in Sheeran's favor -- which I believe is the correct verdict -- but did it for the entirely wrong reason. The defense argued that songwriters don't own certain chord progressions and that while "Thinking Out Loud" shares some similarities with "Let's Get It On," the latter also sounds like songs that came before it. But apropos of nothing, the jury decided they don't sound alike at all -- huh??? -- thus proving that even when U.S. juries are right they're wrong. Again: They DO sound similar, just not similar enough to successfully sue!
