Trick or Treat?

With the Go-Go's getting inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this weekend, I couldn't help but think of Jack E. Jett, by whom I was introduced to Belinda Carlisle many years ago. (After a successful modeling career, Jack became her friend and later road manager/personal assistant.) We sadly lost Jack in 2015. But you can relive five times he celebrated Halloween on his cutting-edge show "The Queer Edge" HERE.

Sidewalk Sale

RIP to my first real sofa, a leather apartment model from Mitchell Gold purchased long enough ago that it could drink. Now try to guess if its same-size replacement WOULDN’T fit through our apartment door(!). Much to our surprise, the company’s owner was a mensch and footed the bill for the Sofa Doctor to dis- and reassemble it -- estimate was $500-$900 because the legs don't just come off -- so there’s a very happy ending! Photos TK.

Song of the Day: 'Silvery Rain' by Olivia Newton-John

It's funny what a huge difference a year can make when you're young, but would you believe the same kid whose first album he bought with his own money was "Have You Never Been Mellow?" in the mid-'70s, who still thinks 1979's "Totally Hot" and 1980's "Xanadu" are two of the best albums of all time, didn't bother purchasing Olivia Newton-John's most successful studio album, 1981's "Physical," until years after the fact? I guess when you're 14 one year is a large percentage of entire your life, but I had completely moved on from this wholesome Aussie blonde to a downtown New York blond named Debbie Harry, which is to say nothing of my side piece from across the pond, Kim Wilde.

Four decades later and "Physical," a charming album in its own right ("Recovery" and "Landslide" should have been smashes, and Carried Away" was like my dream sequel to "Come on Over"!), is getting the deluxe treatment, complete with bonus tracks (live, extended, edited, etc.). "Silvery Rain" was always one of my favorite album cuts, and in 1982 an accompanying video album was released with this rather Bowiesque clip for the song.

Olivia has been candid and brave about her Stage 4 cancer diagnosis, and if for some reason you see this, please know that despite my relationship with Debbie, I never stopped loving you! xo

Song of the Day: 'I've Got a Feeling' by Ivy

Was heartened to see that a couple of video tributes have popped up on YouTube for Adam Schlesinger, the gifted songwriter and musician who tragically succumbed to Covid-19 last year. (The EP and five albums his band Ivy put out between 1994 and 2011 rank high in my heart.) THIS tribute features a long list of friends and colleagues, including Stephen Colbert, for whom he composed "A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift of All!," Rachel Bloom, with whom he wrote 150 songs for "Crazy Ex Girlfriend," Letters to Cleo singer Kay Hanley, who provided the vocals for the "Josie and the Pussycats" film songs written by Adam and others, his proteges Fever High and Kathy Griffin, for whom he wrote the adorable "I'll Say It." And THIS one that went up last week features lots of studio footage and extensive interviews with Andy Chase and Dominique Durand, his bandmates from Ivy, who provide today's song of the day. I've got a feeling we won't be blessed with someone with the talent of Adam Schlesinger anytime soon.

‘The Electric Company’ Debuted 50 Years Ago

Ouch. I guess it shouldn't really surprise me that one of my childhood shows is 50 given the fact that people born the same decade as me are turning 60 nowadays -- but still! Celebrate the beloved PBS series HERE.
