A Facebook friend recounts the youthful moment, with pinpoint precision, that he realized how the world perceived gay people -- not good -- via Billy Campbell's appearance on "The Rosie O'Donnell Show" circa 1999.
Reminds me so much of my own, when Kate Jackson was on “The Tonight Show” in 1982 to promote “Making Love” — and when she told (guest host) David Brenner it was about homosexuality, the crowd reacted similarly. Brenner chastised the audience -- as did Billy and Rosie -- but I learned right then and there that I should be ashamed of myself -- and went from being an outgoing kid to a painfully self-conscious teenager and young man. I'd like to think the variety of LGBT people depicted on television these days has made it somewhat easier for kids today.
