Evolution is good
When Bill and Hillary Clinton released a statement (below) in support of today's marriage equality announcements, a former coworker of mine posted this on his Facebook wall:
Both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, in their 2008 campaigns for the Democratic presidential nomination, expressed their opposition to same-sex marriage. Now, both have reversed themselves, and have endorsed gay and lesbian couples' right to marry. And Slick Willy signed it into law, and now lauds the decision. "We're against that. Oh, wait, now the majority wants it? So do we!" C'mon. Beware the politician whose stance changes every time the wind blows.I normally don't allow myself to get into these kinds of "discussions" on Facebook. Plus I've always liked this guy -- but haven't seen him in 15 years or more -- so I was going to just ignore it, like I normally do. But when someone wrote in the comments "All I can say is Mitt Romney," the false equivalency road this was going down was too much for me to bite my tongue, so responded with this:
You know this post is disingenuous at best. I'll take fake "evolving" -- they all were always FOR equality, but were ahead of the rest of the nation so couldn't express it -- over ongoing bigotry any day, sir.A bit dramatic, but sincere nonetheless.
