OK, so the actual guys who got arrested for having sex on their cruise-ship balcony -- in full public view of the port and town -- aren't quite as hot as I had made them out to be in my original post. But I'm glad the island nation of Dominica didn't lock them up and throw away the key for this "illegal act of buggery." According to The Washington Post: The men, ages 41 and "43," both of Palm Springs, Calif., pleaded guilty to indecent exposure following their arrest during a stop on a gay cruise of the Caribbean. The two initially were picked up on suspicion of the local equivalent of sodomy in the eastern Caribbean island, which prohibits sex between two men, but eventually agreed to the lesser charge. The men’s attorney, Bernadette Lambert, said they were remorseful. “They were struck by the beautiful mountains, the clean and clear fresh air and were having a few cocktails, and so threw caution to the wind,” she told the court. Chief Magistrate Evaline Baptiste ordered the men to pay a nearly $900 fine after calling them “rogues and vagabonds.” They made no comment after the hearing and police drove the men to the airport after they were released.The old "had-to-fuck-butt-'cause-it-was-beautiful-outside defense." A tried-and-true classic!
That's a totally awesome excuse. I'll have to remember that one.

@Mad Professah: No, it actually was "buggery" (as it's known)! But the DA decided to let them off on a lesser charge in order to expedite their release.

ReplyDeleteThe Other Half and I did that (in the not balcony, inner window ledge thingy) on a Mexican cruise, but we were well out to sea. Only a fishing boat or a very adventurous long-distance swimmer could have seen us. Still kind of thrilling, I understand the impulse.
ReplyDelete@Brian, It has nothing to do with gay being against the law on that particular island. It has to do with the fact that the two people were both naked, having sex in plain sight of the general public. If it had been a man and a woman they too would have been arrested. You cannot fornicate in public, no matter what your sexual persuasion, anywhere that I know of.

ReplyDeleteOliver. Yes the two did something profoundly stupid and distasteful, however my point is that the "gay" cruise supports economies of countries that repress their gay populace. I would not spend a dime there, Jamaica, or any other place such as this.
