'Parting Glances' Reunion

UPDATE to my earlier post: It turns out that John Bolger and Richard Ganoung were at Outfest this year (how wonderful to see them here with Kathy Kinney and Steve Buscemi). Maybe the fact that Buscemi still would go to something like this tells you something about how special "Parting Glances" was, or maybe he's just a cool guy. Either way, this photo is a sight for sore eyes. What's even more fun is Richard Wall, the guy who played the fabulous Douglas -- "Well, I told Joan I'd buy one of her paintings on one condition: somewhere in it she has to have Edith Piaf" -- just e-mailed me. So wonderful to hear from him. (Read more about my conversation with "Douglas" here.)

I found this adorable photo of Richard, Kathy and Steve at Outfest 2002 over on Richard "Michael" Ganoung's site here.

  1. What a great piece of nostalgia. I remember that line. I didn't know who the actor. He hold's his hand up doing some kind of gesture with his fingers. I remember his attitude. Ask him if any of those pool boys are still around.

    Kenneth,

Thank you so much for reporting on the PARTING GLANCES reunion. As with so many other people, this film changed my life. I love seeing that the wonderful cast are aging so gracefully. Sigh...John Bolger...

I wish I could have gone!

I was so busy with other Outfest events, that I could not attend this.

I wanted to. This is a GREAT movie! I have to now see it again.

Ken: Thanks for the reporting on this. At the risk of redundancy, this is one of my favorite films and one that changed my life as well. So sad that this was Bill Sherwood's only movie, but to leave this as a legacy is quite an achievement.

  6. Buscemi's a very cool guy. He has NEVER forgotten where he came from ie. this film.

Adam Nathan left acting and runs a software business out of Portland.

I gasped aloud when I realized that the Older Photographer/Mentor in "Billy's Hollywood Screen Kiss" was from "Parting Glances!"

I thought that was a lovely call-back, though it saddened me that NONE of my friends knew what the heck I was talking about. they do now, after unearthing my ancient VHS copy of the film.

    Thanks for this awesome post!

  8. I met Steve Buscemi backstage at the Philadelphia Film Festival when we were giving him an award three years ago. He was in a suit, so after I introduced myself, I smiled and said, "Oh, you look so foofy."

It took him a few seconds, but he got it and smiled. Since I was doing the Q&A with him, I was dressed up too, and afterwards, he looked at me and said, "you look foofy too."

Now, that was a highlight of my life!

DavidEhrenstein, how did you track down Adam Nathan? I know that Outfest couldn't locate him. Now that all the principles were at the screening and we have a Richard Wall interview here...I would love to see an interview with Nathan. Not only was he gorgeous in the film -- but his scenes absolutely *pop.* He had charisma to burn! I'm very surprised he left acting.

I was just at a showing of the restored Parting Glances at the Heights Theater in Minneapolis. Richard Ganoung was there, and verified that no one involved in Parting Glances knows the whereabouts of Adam Nathan. Regardless of what Rotten Tomatoes has to say, the Microsoft software developer is not the actor. The Microsoft guy even states this on his blog -- the one that Rotten Tomatoes references...

Hard as it is to believe, there are two Adam Nathans very big in software engineering, and they both work in the Seattle area. The one at Microsoft is not the Adam Nathan from the movie. The one at Brainbox is. Can't imagine having that kind of talent in two such completely different fields. Sigh.
