Liza Minnelli's famed 1972 television concert film, "Liza With a 'Z'," got the red-carpet treatment at the famed Ziegfield Theatre here in Manhattan last night, with a veritable who's who of gay pop culture showing up for the premiere. Among those spotted by my spy/lover Michael were John Waters, Linda Lavin (no Flo?), Rosie O'Donnell, Mayor Bloomberg (he's certainly got the gay voice), Tony "every gay boy's ultimate fantasy" Danza and Joan Collins, who I hear looks fabulous at 90 and weighs half that.
The event doubled as a benefit for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS -- oh, and also as a 60th birthday party for Miss Minnelli complete with "The Birthday Song" and a big cake (which -- as we all know -- is right up there with gay husbands on the list of things Liza needs to steer clear of).
The restored version of Liza's May 31, 1972, concert at the Lyceum Theatre will debut on SHOWTIME next month, followed by a DVD release. Hailed by critics in its day, the special was a multiple Emmy and Peabody award winner, and was directed by Bob Fosse, fresh from his Oscar-winning collaboration with Liza on "Cabaret."
A great night for a great cause.
