Weekend Tennis Roundup

Alexei Popyrin (lol) and Jessica Pegula won the rain-delayed Canadian Open finals. Full report -- plus all the ATP beef that's fit to post BELOW

Alexei Popyrin, who is probably the last person I'd ever expect to win a Masters 1000 event, easily dismissed Andrey Rublev 2 and 4 to clinch the Canadian Open on Monday in Montreal. The 25-year-old Aussie had a heck of a week, also defeating last week's Washington title winner, Sebastian Korda, as well as Hubert Hurkacz and Grigor Dimitrov. (Note to self: The ATP is entering its WTA era.)

In doubles, Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos defeated Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury, 6-2, 7-6(4), saving a set point against them in the second set to prevent a comeback.

This is the second time they have won in Canada, having previously achieved it in 2019.

Jessica Pegula, the No. 3 seed and the sixth-ranked WTA Tour player, defended her Canadian Open women’s singles title in Toronto, defeating Amanda Anisimova 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 in Monday’s all-American final. I don’t dislike Anisimova. But I do find it odd -- bordering on off-putting -- that she acts as though she *should* win every point, and carries on as if she’s truly stunned when she doesn’t. (NO ONE WINS EVERY POINT.) This can't be a healthy way to live. (No wonder she’s constantly miserable.)

It seems like Luciano Darderi won't be happy ...

Until all of us are erect.

My Nebraska friend was slow to discover there was actually a Challenger event in Lincoln last week. Could have seen Luca Van Assche and the return of Borna Gojo up close and personal, but it wasn't meant to be. Happy to see that British cutie Jacob Fearnley took home the trophy
