This week the men competed in the confusing Davis Cup. And a 17-year-old Czech won her first WTA title while the Wimbledon doubles champ beat the Wimbledon singles champ in the final of a WTA 250 event. (Yikes!) Read my full report BELOW.
In yet another embarrassing moment for the WTA, doubles specialist Katerina Siniakova took out reigning Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina 6-7(4), 7-6(5), 6-4 to capture the WTA 250 event in Portoroz, Slovenia. Rybakina was up a set and a break but could not put away the reigning Wimbledon doubles champ, who hadn't won a singles title in five years. (Yikes!)
In more hopeful news: Czech teenager Linda Fruhvirtova completed her breakthrough week at the Chennai Open, defeating No.3 seed Magda Linette of Poland 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in Sunday’s final to lift her first championship trophy. The 17-year-old Fruhvirtova was down 4-1 in the third set before winning the last five games of the match.
