Simona Halep and Pablo Carreno Busta were the surprise winners at the Canadian Open, as much as anything can be a surprise these days. Full details, plus find out why Diego Schwartzman is smiling, in my report BELOW.
Pablo Carreno Busta -- who seems to only win when I don't want him to -- did it again on Sunday, winning his first ATP Masters 1000 title with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory against Hubert Hurkacz in the final of the Canadian Open. It's the Spaniard's seventh tour-level title. Carreno Busta did God's work by beating f**king Dan Evans in the semis while Kurkacz did God's other work, knocking out Nick Kyrgios in the quarterfinals, so I guess I should just be happy neither of them won.
And in win for normalcy, Simona Halep defeated Beatriz Haddad Maia, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3, to capture the WTA 1000 event in Toronto. The former No. 1 is projected to rise from No. 15 to No. 6 on the new WTA rankings.
Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula claimed the women’s doubles title on Sunday, beating Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Ellen Perez 6-4, 6-7(5), [10-5]. The win catapults Gauff to No. 1 in the world in women's doubles.
At 18 years and 154 days old, Gauff is the second-youngest player in WTA history to reach the top of the doubles rankings after Switzerland's Martina Hingis, who was 17 years and 251 days old. "Being No. 1 is pretty cool," Gauff told reporters after claiming her second doubles title with Pegula and fifth overall. The American has reached two major doubles finals -- French Open 2022 and U.S. Open 2021 -- but is still looking for her first Grand Slam title.
