Huge wins for Alexander Zverev and Aryna Sabalenka in Madrid, plus all the ATP beef that's fit to post BELOW.
Matteo Berrettini came up short in the final -- but absolutely nowhere else.
Alexander Zverev earned his second title in Madrid on Sunday defeating Matteo Berrettini 6-7(8), 6-4, 6-3 to lift his fourth ATP Masters 1000 trophy. I badly wanted the Italian Stallion to come out on top, but it was hard to begrudge the win for Zverev, who overcame three consecutive Top 10 stars to claim the title, following earlier wins against five-time champion Rafael Nadal and two-time runner-up Dominic Thiem.
In doubles, Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos captured their third ATP Masters 1000 title on Sunday with a comeback win over second-seeded Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic, 1-6, 6-3, 10-8.
Was rooting for the Croatian cuties, but always nice to see someone win on home turf -- and the Spanish-Argentinian duo aren't exactly hard on the eyes, either.
The women's event was a different story. Was overjoyed to see No.5 seed Aryna Sabalenka finally put it all together to defeat No.1 seed Ashleigh Barty 6-0, 3-6, 6-4 in the final. It reversed two previous losses this year and gave her her first WTA claycourt title. Would be fun to see if they end up meeting in Paris, a la Dinara Safina and Svetlana Kuznetsova, who played each other a few times in the runup to their 2009 Roland Garros final.
