50 Shot Dead in Orlando Gay Club; Killer Made Pledge to ISIS DuringWorst Gun Massacre in U.S. History -- Update

Completely heartbroken -- and sickened -- about the shooting rampage at a gay nightclub last night in Orlando, that left 50 dead and wounded 53 in what law enforcement is calling the worst mass-shooting in U.S. history. We don't have all the facts yet. But what I do know is the father of shooter Omar Mateen said his son became angry when he saw two men kissing recently in Miami -- but that the murders "had nothing to do with religion"(!) -- and that an assault rifle was used, the type of weapon that was banned by Congress (in a law signed by the first President Clinton) in 1994 before the Republican-controlled Congress allowed it to expire in 2004 (during the second President Bush). Where do we go from here? I'm guessing everyone will continue to ignore the fact that gay Muslims are routinely killed simply for being gay BY THEIR OWN FAMILIES AND TRIBES in their nativelands, and continue to pretend it has nothing to do with what happened here. And Republicans will continue to say the fact that assault rifles are being sold to the general population has nothing to do with the fact that this particular nutjob could kill so many people at such breakneck speed. Welcome to 2016, where we're not allowed to address the real problems going on.

Mateen reportedly “held a Florida security officer license and a state firearms license.”

UPDATE 1:

"I hereby order that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset, June 16, 2016."

UPDATE 2:

Pope Francis issued this statement about the harrowing news:
The terrible massacre that has taken place in Orlando, with its dreadfully high number of innocent victims, has caused in Pope Francis, and in all of us, the deepest feelings of horror and condemnation, of pain and turmoil before this new manifestation of homicidal folly and senseless hatred. Pope Francis joins the families of the victims and all of the injured in prayer and in compassion. Sharing in their indescribable suffering he entrusts them to the Lord so they may find comfort. We all hope that ways may be found, as soon as possible, to effectively identify and contrast the causes of such terrible and absurd violence which so deeply upsets the desire for peace of the American people and of the whole of humanity.
