That story reads more like they're trying to convince themselves that New York is still the trendsetter. It sounds like they really believe it isn't and that Los Angeles has surpassed them. The director of that museum also needs more gender studies time as well as media consumption time. She sounds downright prudish and desiring of a return to past norms with all of their consequences. Her comparative analysis of ads, movies and TV seem based solely on facile visual comparisons.
