One question: Where's the question mark?
PBS had a '70s soul extravaganza on yesterday, with dozens of the era's biggest acts -- or hastily assembled versions of them -- performing to raise money for the network. (Truth be told it was either a 2003 show taped at the Borgota in Atlantic City, or Marvin Hamlisch rose from the dead just for public television!) I probably would have succumb to the six-disc set for a $150 donation if not for the fact that my lover already has all of the best songs from then, including "When Will I See You Again," a favorite of mine that I just learned was performed by Philly-based Three Degrees -- yet another classic to peak at number 2 on the Billboard charts! (Fun fact: The girls performed the song at Prince Charles' 30th birthday party at Buckingham Palace in 1978!)
Chalk up another in the "you stole my life!" column... I love, love, LOVE this song -- which my mom had in her paper bag collection of 45's, and I would listen to on my FisherPrice portable suitcase player "back in the day." Pretty sure I "borrowed" it a few years back -- along with an original pressing of "Honky Tonk Woman." Both records are scratched to hell, but... Now, what is your take on Andy Kim's "Rock Me Gently"?
ReplyDeletei completely concur with frank's comment above. i've loved this song since i first heard it in the early seventies and i made a playlist for my mom yesterday for mother's day and it was the first song on the list!!
