Alright alright alright alright alright! Get ready to shake it like a Polaroid picture [sic] because we'll be heading out this June and July for a double party bill with our friends The Go-Go's !! Here’s a peek at the cities... keep watching this space and www.B52s.com for more details on dates, pre-sales and VIP tickets! ♥ ♥God knows I still love seeing the Go-Go's -- and lots of other '80s bands -- live. But something about the B-52s -- with their zany lyrics and crazy wigs -- gives me pause as I approach AARP status. I saw them twice in their heyday -- once with Ricky Wilson, once without -- but pulled away once Cindy pulled away during the dreadful "Good Stuff" period. Even when she returned to the fold, I passed -- and with news that Keith Strickland has retired from touring, I'm more ambivalent than ever about getting back together ... thoughts?

Unfortunately, I agree 100% on the B's. They were my favorite band in high school. I saw them with Ricky and have seen them through the years in various iterations. Two things have happened: (1) As you point out, they have aged but their shtick has not and (2) (which is worse) "Love Shack," which draws a crowd equivalent to what I imagine Jimmy Buffet draws- -aging, trying-too-hard "party people." I left early when I last saw them (at Chicago's House of Blues) because it was kind of sad. For a long time now, their best songs live were from the first 2.5 albums.
ReplyDeletei disagree. i saw them in 08 and thought they sounded great and put on a really fun show. yeah, the crowd is older and heavier - and so are they - but it was still a party-like atmosphere with lots of booze and good music!
ReplyDeleteBoth bands are guilty of apostrophe abuse, but the B-52s fixed it, apparently.
ReplyDeleteI have probably seen the B's 7 or 8 times and I really liked their last album Funplex, but without Keith I think they might need to hang it up. The gals are still great, but Fred just seems to be phoning it in.
ReplyDeleteI saw the Bs on their tour for Funplex...they were great. JUST GO.
