I didn't see "The Iron Lady," but from what I've heard, it was a lot like "Lincoln": Great lead performance in a well-constructed-if-tedious-at-times film. Meryl Streep took home the Oscar -- and so may Daniel Day-Lewis, who was sublime at bringing Abraham Lincoln to life, while everyone else seemed like they were playing dress-up on a sound stage as the producers patted themselves on the back for making such an "important" film. With the exception of "Jaws" -- when I was 8 -- I guess I don't ever really love Steven Spielberg films, although I admittedly rarely see them. Curious to hear how others felt about this one. (And what was up with that sad ending, anyway?)

Never a big fan of Spielberg movies either. Did like The Color Purple though. I'm kinda on the old side now and to this day I have never seen ET.
ReplyDeleteYour review is spot-on perfection. Great set decoration, continuity, framing. Have no idea who Lincoln really was - if anything as depicted, he must have been an insufferable man. Perfect picture pieces but no heart.
ReplyDeleteI'm not a huge Spielberg fan, either, but I thought "Lincoln' was an intellgent, interesting look into a brief period (a few months) in his administration. Rather modestly scaled, it managed to cover a lot of ground an d included a lot of intriguing details. Superior production design and solid writing, rather more subtle than Spielberg's usual spell-it-all-out approach, and nice touches of humor

ReplyDeleteHe's directed 50, so having seen fewer than 10 is "rarely" to me. Of the ones I've seen, haven't really loved many -- including the one I'm reviewing (because I SAW it).
