This is one of my favorite "early" Cher singles, which sure sounded autobiographical even though she didn't write it and it came out three years before her divorce from Sonny. My friend Christopher and I were just talking about our mutual love for the former Mrs. Bono, whose new album is due in early 2013. We both confessed to singing the greatest hits of any artist "as" Cher -- try Cyndi Lauper, Blondie, U2, anyone! -- and how they invariably sound waaaaay more fun! Cher has had more farewell tours than Brett Favre, but Chris and I both agree on this: Who cares? If she's still up to the task and enjoying herself, more power to her. If a concert happens in New York next year, count me in!
Of course, "House Divided" would not be complete without "You Better Sit Down, Kids," an equally prescient song that Sonny wrote for her. (Is this normal?)
Actually, their marriage soured pretty much as soon their TV comeback soared, due to Sonny's unwillingness to treat Cher like an equal partner.
ReplyDeleteThey were literally living in a mansion divided ala "The War of The Roses" for most of their TV run...how normal is that?!
As an uber Cher fan, if I hear a song that's really cool, I can "hear" it as if the Dark Lady herself is warbling it. How normal is that? ; )
My favorite part of any Cher going away concert, and I've seen two, is the gazillions of Cher drag queens. It's amazing how many interpretations of the "Essence of Cher" there are out there.
