Attended the Kathy Griffin book signing at the Borders in the Time Warner Center yesterday evening. Although I haven't gotten around to reading her
"Official Book Club Selection" memoir yet -- who has time with
Belinda Carlisle and
Rosanne Cash releasing books around the same time? -- I finally got my copy and eager to dig in. My brother Bill accompanied me and said exactly what I was thinking -- say what you want about Kathy, but the woman is a pro. The crowd went wild when she came out in green party dress and vamped it up for the cameras.

Then she announced that her mother always wanted her to do a Q&A at one of these things, so she did, quickly covering all of her favorite topics -- pussies, cunts, vaginas, Levi and Elizabeth Hasselbeck (oh, wait -- I always said cunts) -- and answering the "How was it being on 'Chelsea Lately'?" question by informing us that she LOVES Chelsea (and Sarah Silverman and Janeane Garofalo), and has ever since Handler's days on "Girls Behaving Badly."

The place was PACKED to the rafters -- I've been there for
Belinda Carlisle and
Bananarama signings, and this felt like the Beatles by comparison -- so I was thrilled when my friend Daryl quietly hooked me for my photo op. I told Kathy that I was going to ask her during the Q&A to do her famous Tarzan call, but that I figured no one in the room would understand my Carol Burnett reference. Kathy laughed, and even she seemed surprised by how incredibly young and female the New York crowd was. As the deliriously happy crowd made its way through the line, Kathy greeted each person, signed their book and had an assigned person ready to take fans' photographs. From another planet it would like no different than an assembly line, but somehow Kathy made each person feel like they were her only fan for a minute, much in the same way that she convinces us year after year that's she's really on the D-list.
