Singles Party

I love a good list (apparently I'm not alone, ask any magazine editor what sells), so when I saw "The Top 40 Pop Singles Of The '00s" by my pal Robbie over at ChartRigger sitting in my In-box, I couldn't wait to check it out. Now given the fact that I'm just now working my way into the '90s -- OMG, have you heard "Apartment Life" by Ivy?!!! -- I was actually pretty impressed that I knew of 15 of the 40 songs, and had heard of a few others. (Now that they're almost over, how do you pronounce "the '00s," anyway?)

These are the ones I know: "Hung Up" by Madonna (No. 36), "Bye Bye Bye" by "N Sync (No. 34), "What Goes Around.../...Comes Around" by Justin Timberlake (No. 29.), "Love at First Sight" by Kylie Minogue (No. 23), "Be With You" by Enrique Iglesias (No. 22), "Say My Name" by Destiny's Child (No. 16), "Toxic" by Britney Spears (No. 15), "Look On The Floor (Hypnotic Tango)" by Bananarama (No. 14), "On a Night Like This" by Kylie (No. 11), "Never Be Lonely" by the Feeling (No. 10), "How We Used to Live" by Saint Etienne (No. 8), "We Belong Together" by Mariah Carey (No. 5), "Somebody Told Me" by the Killers (No. 4), "Poker Face" by Lady Gaga (No. 3), and "Since U Been Gone" by Kelly Clarkson -- No. 1.

I've never watched "American Idol" before and don't consider myself a "Kelly fan," but I wouldn't argue about "Since U Been Gone." It's a pop-treat, no doubt about it. I do take exception to two of his picks, though: The Feeling's "Love It When You Call" is waaaaaaay more poptastic than "Never Be Lonely," as is "Stars Above Us" by Saint Etienne (rather than "How We Used to Live"). I'd also argue "Beautiful Stranger" was Madonna's finest moment in a surprisingly weak decade. And if you're gonna drag all these awful boy band songs into the mix, why not go with the best one of all time: "Drowning" by the Backstreet Boys? Best. Song. EVER. (Yeah, I own it.)
