Not to be nit-picky, but he's not a runner. He's a triathlete, heading from the swim portion of the race into T1 (transition 1) where he'll drop the goggles/cap, put on his cycling gear and start biking for many miles.
I do triathlons and I'd be lying if I didn't say that one of the huge perks of doing that sport is getting to see all the eye candy in the race with you. :)
