Now for the real Oliver Stone in me to come out. Did she withdraw because she was told she wasn't getting it? Or did she realize her life was pretty great before all this and finally realized life in the public eye wasn't worth the aggravation? The whole idea that it was because of her "uncle's health" seems hard to believe given the fact that he already had terminal brain cancer when she threw her hat into the ring in the first place. The plot thickens ...
This Caroline Kennedy story just keeps getting more bizarre:The N.Y. Times reports:
In a dramatic and confusing turn of events, Caroline Kennedy informed Gov. David A. Paterson on Wednesday that she would withdraw from consideration for the vacant Senate seat in New York, only to hours later signal that she may be interested in the seat after all.
According to a person who spoke with her, Ms. Kennedy on Wednesday called the governor, who will choose a successor to Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, to tell him that she was no longer interested in the post.
The news appeared to catch the governor off guard, throwing the Paterson administration into confusion and setting off conflicting media reports.
By 11:30 p.m., the person said, after conversations between the governor’s operation and Ms. Kennedy’s camp, Ms. Kennedy was preparing a statement to reassert her interest in the job. But a draft of the statement, which was read to the New York Times, did little to settle the contradictory reports, with less-than-forceful language that said: “I remain interested in the possibility of serving in the U.S. Senate.’’
At the very least, the developments cast serious questions about Ms. Kennedy’s interest in being a senator.
It seems rather apparent that: (a) Paterson would rather appoint Cuomo to the post rather than Kennedy, in order to neutralize a future opponent for the governorship, and (2) This was a lame face-saving strategy to have Kennedy back out rather than not get selected.

ReplyDeleteWhen did a Harvard BA and a Columbia JD become passe for the Senate??? I guess the small private, liberal arts college I graduated from could get me to DC after all. I hope this ends all the lame questions she gets about her political ambitions. She's been saying no all this time and when she finally gives in....
