So Ted Haggard, one of the most prominent evangelical pastors in the nation, abruptly resigned this evening as president of the National Association of Evangelicals amid allegations that he carried on a three-year sexual relationship with a male prostitute.
For those unfamiliar with Haggard's "work," he's famous for saying that homosexuality is a "sin" and "devastating for the children of our nation" and "for the future of Western civilization."
Time Magazine ranked him as one of the 25 most influential evangelicals and Harper’s contributing editor Jeff Sharlet noted, "No pastor in America holds more sway over the political direction of evangelicalism than does Pastor Ted." (Joe ranked him No. 1 on the Gay Face list.)
Haggard, founder of the 14,000-member New Life Church, has continued to deny the accusations but said in a statement released by the church that he could "not continue to minister under the cloud created by accusations made on Denver talk radio this morning." The hooker's cache of letters, e-mails, and voicemails from Haggard, however, tell a very different story. (DenverPost)
Ain't love grand?
