Page 1 Consider (07/25)

  • Detroit Rock City: MSNBC tackles another one of my old hometowns -- this time spending 24 hours in the Motor City. One question: why didn't I ever get to eat at Mike's Famous Ham Place? (MSNBC)
  • Risky Business: In Washington, the House overwhelmingly approved legislation recently that would clamp down on Internet casinos. Rep. Jim Leach, Republican of Iowa, the co-author of the legislation, says he is leading the effort because online gambling is, among other things, "detrimental to families." This got me thinking: if being part of a family is such a precarious place to be -- and if you can't "be" in a family without every little thing threatening to destroy it (you know, gay marriage, abortion rights, adult bookstores, prostitution, gambling, etc.), then perhaps you should just be alone and save everybody the trouble of your inevitable downfall. (NYT)
  • So You Think You Can Sing? A new Fox TV reality show will pair singers and celebrities trying to prove they can carry a tune. Cyndi Lauper, Chaka Khan, Michael Bolton, Smokey Robinson, Dionne Warwick, Macy Gray, Patti LaBelle, Kenny Loggins and Richard Marx are among the pop stars who will be part of "Celebrity Duets," which debuts on Aug. 29 (the "celebrities" have yet to be named). The series is an elimination contest in the style of "American Idol," with judges and viewers deciding the fate of the celebrities. Two questions: A.) Wasn't this show already on last year ("But Can They Sing?") B.) Macy Gray??? (AP)
  • Fun With Cocaine: If Congressman Robert Wexler can actually get flak for merely playing along with Stephen Colbert, then this country really is as f**ked up as I thought it was. Jesus Christ. (AP)
  • Talk of the Town: Michael and I are going to see the Pretenders on Thursday at the Bowery Ballroom! Regular readers know that we missed the boat last time Chrissie Hynde and the boys were in town -- but not a second time! (TicketMaster)
  • Kid Vicous: I bought my nephew the cutest David Beckham inspired soccer T-shirt for his birthday yesterday at this London-based boutique called ShowRoom 64 in Greenwich Village. It looks like it's the trendy brand for Hollywood's new moms, but I was hooked just peeking in the window. I mean really: Doesn't every 4-year-old need a Siouxsie Sioux tee? (ShowRoom64)
